Collecting Your Baby’s Cord Blood for Banking
The banking process begins
with you. Only you can decide whether or not to collect and preserve your baby’s
cord blood as a resource for your family’s future health. It is important to
make the decision far enough in advance of delivery to receive your collection
kit and to ensure your
healthcare provider is prepared to
help.

Step One: Enroll with CordBancUSA
You can start the enrollment process online, by phone, or by fax. After you complete enrollment, we will send you a collection and shipping kit. The kit contains a collection bag and supplies, medical-quality shipping materials, and instructions for your healthcare provider.

Step Three: Take your kit to the hospital for the
delivery
Cord blood collection needs to be performed immediately after the birth of your baby. That means the collection kit should be with you when you get to the hospital. The kit contains everything your healthcare provider needs to collect your baby’s cord blood.

Step
Four: Collecting the cord blood
After delivery, your healthcare provider will collect your baby’s cord blood in the blood bag included with your kit. When the blood flow into the bag has stopped, your healthcare provider will close the bag and place it in the container provided. Your healthcare provider will also collect a small amount of blood from the mother. This maternal blood is screened for certain diseases that might contraindicate long-term storage of the cord blood.
